Why No Yakuza?

In case you were wondering why there are never any Yakuza in my stories, the answer is simple: They weren’t around yet.

In general, underworld organizations require there to be a central government that embodies the “normal” world — which the “underworld” generally preys on. But the Sengoku Jidai was defined by the complete breakdown of any semblance of central authority. There was no shōgun. The country was in chaos. (more…)
